MLSBG Annual Show 2021


Due to cancellation of Three Counties Rare and Minorities Show




A one-day workshop, by kind invitation of Dr Louisa Gidney, our own international expert on polycerate (multihorned) sheep to be held on Louisa’s smallholding at Tow Law near Bishop Auckland. In the morning Louisa will guide us through the diverse aspects of polyceracy, whilst the afternoon will review our card grading rules, the basis of our Approved Manx Loaghtan Judge training, using Louisa’s sheep for practice.


Location: Tow Law, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham



Arrive 10am to 10.30am: Coffee and display of Craft Competition entries.

10.30am: Talk about the polycerate phenomenon and the MLSBG’s contribution to the genetic understanding of our breed’s distinguishing characteristic by Dr Louisa Gidney

12.00 noon: Buffet lunch at the Brown Horse Hotel

1.30pm:  Card grading Manx Loaghtan sheep – review of current card grading standards and practical application of card grading by attendees.

3pm: Plenary session on card gradings and suggestions for any identified changes. Announcement of Craft Competition winners.

3.15pm: Tea and disperse.

In the absence of our Annual Show, the Committee has agreed to hold the Annual Craft Competition at Louisa’s workshop (see above). Entries can be taken on the day or posted to John Hedges, 59 Spring Lane, Bassingbourn, ROYSTON, Hertfordshire, SG8 5HT to arrive by 3rd August 2021.


Class 1: Garment: Finished garment, using Manx Loaghtan wool by any method.

Class 2: Toy: An item made using Manx Loaghtan fleece, wool, horn or hide.

Class 3: Open Class (could include novelty, household or utility item) made using Manx Loaghtan fleece, wool, horn or hide.


Currently going ahead as a formal Manx Loaghtan breed show and sale 10th (show) and 11th (sale) of September 2021. Animals forward will need to be fully registered with Combined Flock Book, so don’t leave things to the last minute.  

Animals are to be shown as “clean, just off the moor”, one ram lamb per vendor and if vendor putting more than one ram forward, two rams must be accompanied by 3 ewes, 3 rams by 6 ewes etc.

Mrs Suzanne Taylor of Peatling Parva will be our Judge and Mrs Diana Hammond our Steward. Should any members wish to develop stewarding skills, please offer to help Diana, who will be pleased to pass on her expertise.


Our first official, Northern Breed Show and Sale will be held at Carlisle on 18th September 2021. Mrs Beryl Thompson of Sneaton is our Judge, John Hedges will be Steward. All animals will be card graded, so volunteers from novice to expert will be welcome.
